This year we are working towards our achieving active schools flag. We will be continuing Dancing in the School Yard at every break time.

We had a poster competition to promote active schools.  Winners were Cara K and Kate G. Pictures to follow.

Active School Week 2018 by Lucy White

ASW took place in St Mary’s N.S. Tagoat from 23rd – 27th April 2018. We are working towards getting our Active School Flag. Ms Horan said that the “The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often”.

We do different activities every morning for our Active School Flag. Children from the Active School Committee come into each class to do the ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ exercises every morning. They teach us lots of different exercises. My favourite exercise is the lunge.

During ASW, we also did extra activities every day which were organised by the AS Committee.

On Monday, Billy, Alice, Jack S and Jack B from Wexford Academy of Martial Arts came to teach us and show us kickboxing. They are all world champions. I loved it and I learned some super cool moves. I think they are the best in the world at their sport.

On Tuesday, Sharon from Superstars Stage Academy was here. We learned about acting, dancing and singing. We made up a play and we learned a new dance routine. It was so much fun.

On Wednesday, we did our ‘Walk and Talk with a Smile’. We walked around the village as a school and everyone had a walking buddy. It was very very sunny on that day and I was very hot. Everyone enjoyed it.

On Thursday, Colm Doyle from St. Marys GAA was here. Every class did hurling with him. We played lots of different games and we learned hurling skills.

On Friday, unfortunately, cricket by Wexford Wanderers had to be postponed until another week because

it was raining. I can’t wait to do that.

All the children got very active for the week. The teachers were watching closely as they had to choose a winner for the ‘Active Mover of the Week’. One child from every class was chosen and they won a certificate and a prize. Some won swimming passes, dance classes, horseriding lessons and many more.

I loved ASW because I like when we are active not when we are lazy. Being active is good for us because it makes us healthy and fit and makes our muscles stronger. I loved ASW because it was lots of fun and I love seeing people getting more active. The ‘Wake Up and Shake Up’ every morning is really good because it helps us to wake up quick up so we can get going and shake up to do our work well. We will continue to do this every morning after ASW.

Don’t forget our Active School Flag slogan is “Get active at home, get active at school, being healthy and fit is super cool”.
